Buffalo Theory MTL signed to Galy Records

Montreal Rock/Metal band BUFFALO THEORY MTL has recently signed to Galy Records. The band recorded their debut album Heavy Ride in early 2012 at studio le Plateau in Quebec. The album is set for release on May 1st, 2012 and was mixed and mastered by Dan Lagacé (Grim Skunk, Anvil). The band has a sound that is similar to Priestess, Down and High on Fire. You can purchase the album at the Galy E-Store. If you get your copy before it hits the stores, you’ll receive a free 11×17 color poster and a free bonus CD !

In a comment, the band said: “The band is proud to be a part of the Galy Records family. Some of us have been on the Galy roster before with other bands so it’s kind of like coming home. It will be a great honor and a pleasure to work together on promoting this release. 2012 will be a great year for us!” The band features current members of Les Ekorchés and ex-members of Ghoulunatics and Arseniq33. Punk quartet Billy Talent started off their life in the early 1990s as Pezz, a name the Ontario-based band adopted in high school. The four boyhood friends, songster Ben Kowalewicz, guitarist Ian D’Sa, bassist Jon Gallant and percussionist Aaron Solowoniuk, met in secondary school where they joined forces around their shared talents and love of music. At the end of the decade the group swapped out their former moniker for their current title after a character in the book Hard Core Logo.

An underground staple on the hard core scene for years, Billy Talent self-released two EPs, Demoluca and Dudebox, both efforts faring well locally. Encouraged by their growing success, the quartet headed back into the box to turn out their independent studio debut Watoosh! While the album was a hit with their current fan base it failed to reach the mainstream audience that Billy Talent was aiming to tap. Luckily their debut effort didn’t fall on deaf ears, and through a blend of Kowalewicz’s connections at a local radio station and growing label interest, Billy Talent snagged its first record deal after co-signing with Atlantic and Warner in 2002.

Their self-titled 2003 sophomore release showcased the group’s evolution from hardcore rock into the poppy-punk style they are now recognized for. The album reached the mainstream audience they had been seeking when it went Gold in Germany and triple Platinum in Canada. Singles “Try Honesty,” “The Ex” and “Nothing To Lose” helped to carry the act through a whirlwind tour lasting into 2005. On the way down the path the boys garnered several awards including two Junos. In spite of some personal health issues, the band closed ranks to support one another and headed back into the studio.

Billy Talent’s recognition as a top player in the punk rock music scene was reinforced with the success of their next two albums, Billy Talent II and Billy Talent III, released in 2006 and 2009 respectively. Both efforts catapulted to the top of Canadian music charts as well as hitting high on charts across Europe, gaining triple Platinum certifications. Embarking on a world tour in 2006, the band hit the festival circuit across Europe, the UK and the US playing with entrenched artists like Incubus at Vans Warped Tour, Rise Against and Cancer Bats. 2009 saw Billy Talent grace the stage at Coachella music festival with The Cure, Paul McCartney and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

In 2011 Kowalewicz announced that the band was off the road and diving back into the studio to focus on their next album endeavor. In an unexpected move the band announced that the upcoming album would fall outside of the “Billy Talent” trilogy and simply be branded X. A tweet revealed that the album would be released in July 2012. As the band’s sound continues to mature, fans can only be anticipating material of the same caliber from this punk rock fundamental.

This post features some random Canadian Music News bits. As reported on blabbermouth,Vancouver, BC, metal band WEST OF HELL featuring Zimmer’s Hole frontman Chris Valagao is set to release its debut album Spiral Empire on May 8, 2012 via Reversed Records. The album was produced by Rob Shallcross and was recorded at the Factory Studios in Vancouver, BC. Also reported on blabbermouth, Montreal’s THE AGONIST is set to release their third studio album Prisoners on June 5, 2012 via Century Media Records. The album was produced by Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy) and mixed by Tue Madsen.

In other recent Canadian Music News, KEN MODE won this year’s JUNO for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year! Congratulations to KEN MODE, an awesome band from Canada.

Also, RUSH is set to release its first radio single from their new album “Clockwork Angels”. The first single is the tune “Headlong Flight.”

Cryptopsy singer Matt McGachy joins Montreal’s THE CATALYST

The Catalyst, from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, have replaced former singer Matt Bailie with Cryptopsy singer Matt McGachy. Commenting on the transition, THE CATALYST guitarist Graham “G” McDonagh said: “We had reached somewhat of a crossroads, and it had become obvious to everyone in the band the there were two distinct directions forming. The separation with Matt Bailie was amicable and we will remain dear friends, but was necessary for the continuation and growth of the band. Having known and played with Matt McGachy previously and being very familiar with his vocal style and skill, it was clear to us that we are on the same wave length with him and that he is the perfect fit for THE CATALYST both musically, personally and professionally at this crucial point in the band’s history. We are extremely excited to continue writing brand new material, performing live and taking the next steps with Matt McGachy onboard!” McGachy joins THE CATALYST during the writing process of the band’s follow-up to their 2011 debut, independently released album, “Origins”, and one week after the release of their debut video for “When The Sun Shall Rise”.
